Recipe Tips

Ensure your eggs are at room temperature before mixing them with the other ingredients. This helps to create a more homogenous batter and improves the cake's rise and texture.
When measuring flour, use the spoon and level method instead of scooping directly from the bag. This prevents overpacking the flour, which can lead to a dense cake. Spoon the flour into a measuring cup and level it off with a knife.
Avoid overmixing the batter once the dry ingredients are combined with the wet ingredients. Overmixing can develop gluten in the flour, resulting in a tough cake. Mix until just combined for a light and fluffy texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute the yogurt with something else?

Yes, you can substitute yogurt with sour cream or an equal amount of buttermilk for a similar texture and moisture. Additionally, if you're looking for a dairy-free option, you can use non-dairy yogurt such as almond or coconut yogurt.

How should I store leftover cake?

Store any leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If it’s warm or humid outside, it’s best to refrigerate it to prevent spoilage, where it can last for up to a week. You can also freeze slices for longer storage, lasting up to 3 months.

What should I do if the cake doesn’t rise properly?

If your cake doesn’t rise, it may be due to expired baking powder or not mixing the ingredients properly. Ensure your baking powder is fresh (check the expiration date) and make sure to beat the batter well until it is smooth and well-combined, as this incorporates air which helps the cake rise.

Recommended Drink Pairings

Wine

Portuguese: Late Bottled Vintage Port - This rich dessert wine complements the chocolate's depth and enhances the cake's sweetness.

General: Merlot - A smooth and fruity Merlot balances the cake's sweetness while providing a lovely contrast to the chocolate flavor.

Beer

Portuguese: Super Bock Stout - This dark beer has roasted malt flavors that pair wonderfully with the chocolate in the cake.

General: Milk Stout - A creamy milk stout enhances the dessert experience with its sweetness and chocolate notes.

Other Beverages

Coffee: A rich, dark roast coffee complements the chocolate while adding a delightful bitter contrast to the sweetness of the cake.

Sadly 25 minutes wasn't enough for this cake to bake fully so I had to add a few more minutes on, which is fine. I used the exact measurements but the batter was so thick and elastic but I still managed to mix it ok. Unfortunately I find the cake lacks in flavour, I'm not sure if it's a lack of sugar or other flavours. I even added some chocolate chips for extra flavour but I can't taste much else apart from that 😔 to be honest this is the only cake I have been disappointed by, all other recipes on here are always fantastic but I would suggest if anybody else makes this to possibly add a bit more sugar or some vanilla extract or maybe a yoghurt that is slightly sweeter or more flavourful. I added proper cocoa powder so I know it wasn't anything to do with that. The cake however isn't awful and is edible of course & looks beautiful. The marble like look is wonderful and a great idea. Instructions on this recipe easy to follow which I'm so grateful for. Thank you as always for the recipes you kindly post to this website. I will add extras to this cake in future if I decide to make it again but that's all as the appearance is spot on ⭐️

Any yogurt will do but I suggest plain and cocoa powder.
