Tips for Success

When soaking the cod, ensure it is submerged in cold water for at least 24 hours, changing the water every 8 hours to remove excess salt. This helps achieve the right texture and flavor.

For added depth of flavor, sauté the garlic and onions in the olive oil until they are caramelized before adding the potatoes and peppers. This will enhance the overall taste of the stew.

Avoid overcooking the cod; add it to the stew in the last 10-15 minutes of cooking. Cod can become tough and rubbery if cooked too long, so be sure to check for doneness by looking for the fish to flake easily with a fork.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of fish instead of cod for this stew?

Yes, you can substitute cod with other firm white fish such as haddock, pollock, or tilapia. Just make sure to adjust the cooking time as different fish have varying cooking durations.

What if I don't have white wine on hand?

If you don't have white wine, you can substitute it with an equal amount of vegetable broth or chicken broth for a similar depth of flavor. Alternatively, you can use lemon juice diluted with water.

How can I store the leftovers of the cod stew?

To store leftovers, let the stew cool to room temperature, then transfer it to an airtight container. It can be refrigerated for up to 3 days. You can also freeze the stew for up to 2 months; just be sure to thaw it in the refrigerator before reheating.

Recommended Drink Pairings

  • Sauvignon Blanc: This white wine's crisp acidity complements the richness of the cod stew.
  • Chardonnay: A lightly oaked Chardonnay enhances the stew's flavors with its buttery notes.
  • Sparkling Water: The effervescence refreshes the palate between bites of the hearty stew.
  • Herbal Tea: A warm herbal tea, like chamomile, provides a soothing contrast to the savory dish.
  • Ginger Ale: The sweetness and spice of ginger ale can balance the savory and slightly salty elements of the stew.
