Directions

  1. In a large frying pan with oil, saute the onions and garlic for several minutes.
  2. Add all of the spices, parsley, chicken bouillon, tomato paste, piri piri sauce, and half of the beer and let the sauce simmer for approximately 5 minutes.
  3. Once simmered, add the shrimp and remaining beer.
  4. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasonings to suite your taste.
  5. Once the sauce has been absorbed by the shrimp and the shrimp have turned pink, remove from the pan and serve.

Recipe Tips

Ensure the shrimp are properly deveined and cleaned, as any remaining shell or vein can affect the texture and flavor. Consider using fresh shrimp for better taste and texture rather than frozen, which can be watery if not thawed properly.
When adding the beer to the pan, allow it to simmer for a few minutes before adding the shrimp. This helps to reduce the alcohol content and enhances the flavors, ensuring the shrimp absorb the beer's essence without being overly bitter.
Be cautious with the amount of piri piri sauce you add. Start with the recommended 1 1/2 teaspoons, then taste and adjust according to your spice preference. This will help avoid overpowering the dish, especially if you're serving it to guests with varying spice tolerances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I substitute for piri piri sauce if I can't find it in stores?

If you can't find piri piri sauce, you can create a substitute by mixing together hot sauce (like Tabasco or Sriracha) with a pinch of cayenne pepper and some vinegar. Alternatively, use a combination of chili flakes, lemon juice, and olive oil to achieve a similar flavor.

How should I store leftovers of Gorete's Spicy Piri Piri Shrimp?

Leftover shrimp can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Reheat gently in a pan over low heat to prevent overcooking the shrimp.

What if my shrimp don’t turn pink while cooking; is it safe to eat?

Shrimp should turn pink and opaque when cooked properly. If they don’t, they may not be cooked through. Ensure they reach an internal temperature of 120°F (49°C). If they are still translucent, continue cooking for a few more minutes until done.

Recommended Drink Pairings

Wine

Portuguese: Vinho Verde - This light and crisp wine has a refreshing acidity that complements the spiciness of the piri piri shrimp beautifully.

General: Sauvignon Blanc - A zesty and aromatic white wine with citrus notes that pairs well with seafood and enhances the dish's vibrant flavors.

Beer

Portuguese: Super Bock - This popular lager has a balanced flavor profile that refreshes the palate while harmonizing with the spice of the dish.

General: Pale Ale - The hoppy bitterness of a pale ale provides a nice contrast to the heat of the piri piri sauce, making it an excellent pairing.

Other Beverages

Lemonade: The bright and tangy notes of lemonade help to cool down the spice and enhance the overall dining experience.
