Pair it with baked potatoes and a fresh salad, and you’ve got a meal that’s both satisfying and simple to whip up. Perfect for any night when you want something delicious!

Tips for Success

Ensure the horse mackerel is thoroughly cleaned and dried before coating with corn flour; excess moisture can cause the coating to become soggy and prevent it from crisping up during frying.

For a more flavorful sauce, sauté the minced garlic in a little oil before adding it to the vinegar and other ingredients; this will mellow the raw garlic taste and add depth to the sauce.

Avoid overcrowding the frying pan with fish; fry the horse mackerel in batches to maintain the oil temperature, which ensures an even, crispy texture on all sides.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I use instead of corn flour for coating the fried horse mackerel?

You can substitute corn flour with all-purpose flour, rice flour, or even a gluten-free flour blend if you need a gluten-free option. Each will give a slightly different texture but will work well for frying.

How should I store leftover fried horse mackerel?

Leftover fried horse mackerel should be cooled completely, then stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It can last for up to 2 days. To reheat, consider using an oven or air fryer to maintain its crispiness.

What if my sauce is too salty?

If your sauce turns out too salty, you can balance it by adding a splash of vinegar or a pinch of sugar. Alternatively, you can add more chopped parsley or finely diced tomatoes to dilute the saltiness.

Recommended Drink Pairings

  • Sauvignon Blanc: Its crisp acidity and citrus notes complement the fried fish and cut through the richness.
  • Dry Riesling: The slight sweetness balances the spiciness of the sauce while enhancing the dish's flavors.
  • Sparkling Water: A refreshing option that cleanses the palate between bites without overpowering the dish.
  • Chardonnay: A lightly oaked version adds a creamy texture that pairs well with the fried mackerel.
  • Green Tea: The earthy notes of green tea provide a soothing contrast to the bold flavors of the sauce.

When you say minced ground pepper, do you mean crushed red pepper?

Hi Mike, I am sure you can get it from Portuguese stores if you live in highly populated Portuguese areas, we buy them frozen all the time here in Canada.
