Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you can substitute sugar with honey or agave nectar, but keep in mind that both are sweeter than regular sugar. Use about 2/3 cup of honey or agave for every cup of sugar. You may need to adjust the wet ingredients slightly since honey adds moisture.
To store leftover carrot cake, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container. You can keep it at room temperature for 2 days or refrigerate it for up to a week. If you want to store it for a longer period, consider freezing it, which can preserve it for up to 3 months.
If your carrot cake turns out too dense or doesn't rise, it may be due to overmixing the batter, which can incorporate too much air and gluten. Ensure you're mixing until just combined. Also, double-check that your baking powder is fresh and active, as expired leavening agents can lead to poor rising.
Recommended Drink Pairings
Wine
Portuguese: Madeira Wine - This fortified wine offers a rich, nutty flavor that complements the sweetness of the carrot cake beautifully.
General: Riesling - A slightly sweet Riesling enhances the cake's flavors while balancing its richness with its acidity.
Beer
Portuguese: Super Bock - This light lager has a crisp profile that refreshes the palate between bites of the moist cake.
General: Blonde Ale - The subtle malt sweetness and light hop bitterness of a blonde ale make it a great match for the cake's flavors.
Other Beverages
Espresso: A shot of rich espresso provides a bold contrast to the cake’s sweetness, enhancing the overall tasting experience.
