Recipe Tips

For a perfectly flaky pie crust, chill your pie pastry in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out. This helps to keep the butter cold, resulting in a flaky texture when baked.
To enhance the flavor of your apple filling, consider adding 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg to the sugar mixture. This will complement the tartness of the Granny Smith apples beautifully.
Avoid a soggy bottom crust by pre-baking (blind baking) the bottom crust for 10-15 minutes before adding the apple filling. This helps the crust maintain its texture and prevents it from becoming mushy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of apple for this pie?

Yes, you can use other types of apples such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Braeburn. These apples also have the right balance of sweetness and tartness, but Granny Smith apples are preferred for their tart flavor and firmness.

How should I store leftover apple pie?

Leftover apple pie can be stored in the refrigerator, covered tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, for up to 3-4 days. You can also freeze the pie for longer storage; wrap it well and it can last up to 3 months in the freezer.

What can I do if my pie crust shrinks while baking?

To prevent your pie crust from shrinking, ensure that you allow the dough to rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out. Also, avoid stretching the dough when fitting it into the pie pan, and make sure your oven is fully preheated before baking.

Recommended Drink Pairings

Wine

Portuguese: Vinho Verde - This light and crisp wine complements the tartness of the Granny Smith apples beautifully.

General: Riesling - A slightly sweet Riesling enhances the flavors of the apples and balances the pie's richness.

Beer

Portuguese: Super Bock - This lager's mild bitterness and crisp finish pair well with the sweet and tart flavors of the pie.

General: Hard Cider - A refreshing hard cider accentuates the apple flavor in the pie, making for a perfect pairing.

Other Beverages

Spiced Apple Cider: Warm spiced apple cider echoes the apple flavors in the pie and adds a cozy touch to the dining experience.
