Tips for Success
• When preparing the apples and pears, ensure you peel and core them properly to avoid any tough bits in the cake. Additionally, consider slicing them thinly to allow for even distribution and a tender texture throughout the cake.
• To enhance the flavor profile of your cake, try adding a teaspoon of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dry ingredients. This will complement the sweetness of the apples and pears beautifully.
• Avoid overmixing the batter once you add the flour, as this can lead to a dense cake. Mix just until the dry ingredients are incorporated to keep the cake light and airy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I substitute the brown sugar with white sugar or another sweetener?
Yes, you can substitute brown sugar with white sugar in equal amounts. However, brown sugar adds a deeper flavor and moisture due to its molasses content. If you prefer to use a sweetener, you may consider using coconut sugar or a sugar substitute, keeping in mind that it may alter the texture and flavor.
How should I store the apple and pear cake after baking?
After baking and cooling slightly, store the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you want to keep it longer, it can be refrigerated for up to a week or frozen for up to 3 months. To freeze, wrap the cake tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil.
What should I do if my cake is dense or doesn't rise properly?
If your cake turns out dense, it might be due to overmixing the batter or using expired baking powder. To ensure a lighter cake, mix just until combined and check the expiration date of your baking powder. You might also want to fold in the pureed fruits gently instead of fully mixing them in, to avoid developing too much gluten.
