Tips for Success

When sautéing the garlic, be careful not to burn it; cook it on medium heat until fragrant, which usually takes about 1-2 minutes. Burned garlic can impart a bitter flavor to the dish.

For better flavor absorption, marinate the shrimp in a mixture of olive oil, crushed garlic, and a pinch of salt for at least 30 minutes before cooking. This enhances the overall taste of the shrimp as they soak in the spices.

Avoid overcooking the shrimp, as they can become rubbery. Cook them just until they turn pink and opaque, which usually takes about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove them from the heat immediately to prevent residual cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen shrimp instead of fresh shrimp for this recipe?

Yes, you can use frozen shrimp. Just make sure to thaw them completely before cooking. It's best to do this in the refrigerator overnight or under cold running water for quicker thawing.

What can I substitute for piri piri peppers if I can't find them?

If you can't find piri piri peppers, you can substitute with red chili flakes or fresh jalapeños for some heat. Adjust the quantity based on your heat preference.

How should I store leftover shrimp after cooking?

To store leftover shrimp, let them cool to room temperature, then place them in an airtight container and refrigerate. They can be kept for up to 2 to 3 days. Reheat them gently on the stove or in the oven to avoid overcooking.

Recommended Drink Pairings

  • Chardonnay: Its buttery notes complement the richness of the shrimp and butter.
  • Pilsner: The crispness and lightness cut through the spice of the dish.
  • Sparkling Water: The bubbles refresh the palate and balance the heat.
  • Cold Brew Coffee: The smoothness and slight bitterness contrast nicely with the spicy flavors.
  • Ginger Ale: The sweetness and spice of ginger enhance the dish's heat while providing a refreshing finish.
