Recipe Tips

When using fresh clams, soak them in salt water for at least 30 minutes before cooking to help purge any sand or grit. This ensures a cleaner final dish.
To enhance the flavor of the dish, consider marinating the shrimp in a bit of piri-piri sauce and olive oil for 20-30 minutes before cooking. This will infuse the shrimp with extra flavor.
Avoid overcooking the shrimp and clams; they should be cooked just until they're opaque and the clams have opened. Overcooking will make them tough and chewy, ruining the texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen clams in this recipe and do they taste the same as fresh?

Yes, you can use frozen clams if fresh ones aren't available. While fresh clams offer a brinier flavor and a firmer texture, frozen clams are convenient and will still yield a delicious dish. Just make sure to thaw them properly before cooking.

What can I substitute for Piri-Piri sauce if I can't find it?

If you can't find Piri-Piri sauce, you can use a mix of hot sauce, garlic, and a bit of vinegar as a substitute. Alternatively, a combination of sriracha with lemon juice or a blend of chili powder and olive oil can add a similar spicy kick.

How should I store leftovers of Piri Piri Clams and Shrimp?

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They should be consumed within 1-2 days for best quality. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave until heated through. Avoid reheating multiple times to maintain texture and flavor.

Recommended Drink Pairings

Wine

Portuguese: Vinho Verde - This light and zesty wine complements the brininess of the clams and shrimp while enhancing the dish's fresh flavors.

General: Sauvignon Blanc - Its crisp acidity and citrus notes will balance the spicy and savory elements of the dish beautifully.

Beer

Portuguese: Super Bock - This lager offers a refreshing taste that pairs well with seafood and cuts through the richness of the olive oil.

General: Lager - A clean, crisp lager will provide a refreshing contrast to the heat of the piri-piri sauce and enhance the overall experience.

Other Beverages

White Tea: Its delicate flavors will not overpower the dish, providing a soothing and aromatic complement to the spices and seafood.
