Ingredients
1 3 lb can of pork and beans1 cup of ketchup½ cup of brown sugar, lightly packed½ onion, diced½ lb of bacon, diced1 Portuguese sausage, sliced½ teaspoon red pepper flakes or paste
Directions
- Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F).
- Place the diced bacon and chouriço in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté until the fats render and the meats become slightly crispy and golden brown.
- Add the diced onions to the skillet with the meats. Sauté for 3–5 minutes until the onions are translucent and have absorbed the flavorful oils from the chouriço.
- Combine the pork and beans, ketchup, brown sugar, and red pepper flakes in a large oven-safe casserole dish or Dutch oven. Stir in the sautéed meat and onion mixture, ensuring the ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Bake uncovered for 45 minutes. The sauce should thicken to a syrupy consistency and the top should develop a deep, caramelized glaze.
- Remove from the oven and let the beans rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to fully meld.
