Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of shrimp for this recipe?

Yes, you can use any size of shrimp you prefer, but cooking times may vary. Smaller shrimp will cook faster, while larger ones like tiger or jumbo shrimp will take a bit longer. Adjust the grilling time accordingly to ensure they are cooked through but not overcooked.

What can I substitute for Piri Piri sauce if I can't find it?

If Piri Piri sauce is not available, you can use a combination of hot sauce mixed with some lemon juice and a bit of olive oil for a similar flavor profile. Alternatively, sriracha or a spicy barbecue sauce can also work as a great substitute.

How should I store leftover shrimp and sauce?

You can store leftover shrimp and sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, making sure not to overcook the shrimp to avoid them becoming tough.

Recommended Drink Pairings

Wine

Portuguese: Vinho Verde - This light and crisp wine complements the grilled shrimp and balances the heat of the Piri Piri sauce with its refreshing acidity.

General: Sauvignon Blanc - The bright citrus notes and herbal undertones of Sauvignon Blanc enhance the flavors of the shrimp and the zesty lemon juice.

Beer

Portuguese: Super Bock - This pale lager is light and refreshing, making it a perfect match for the grilled flavors and the spicy kick of the sauce.

General: Lager - A classic lager provides a clean and crisp palate-cleansing effect that pairs well with the BBQ shrimp without overshadowing its flavors.

Other Beverages

Lemonade: The bright, tangy flavors of lemonade will complement the shrimp and enhance the dish's citrus notes while providing a refreshing contrast to the spice.
