Recipe Tips

Make sure to measure your flour correctly by spooning it into the measuring cup and leveling it off with a knife. Too much flour can lead to a dense bread.
Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free area covered with a damp cloth or plastic wrap. If your kitchen is cold, consider placing the bowl in a turned-off oven with the light on to create a warm environment.
Avoid over-kneading the dough. Since this is a rustic bread, you want to keep the dough slightly shaggy; knead just enough to bring it together, which will help in achieving that crusty texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour?

Yes, you can substitute all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour, but keep in mind that whole wheat flour will absorb more water. You may need to increase the water slightly to achieve the right dough consistency.

How should I store the leftover bread to maintain its freshness?

To store leftover bread, allow it to cool completely, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and keep it at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, slice the bread and freeze it wrapped in plastic and then in foil, where it can last for up to 3 months.

What should I do if my dough didn't rise properly?

If the dough didn't rise, it could be due to expired yeast or inadequate room temperature. Ensure your yeast is fresh and try placing the dough in a warmer spot, such as near a heater or in an oven with the light on. If it still doesn't rise, it may be best to start over.
