  5. Remove the salmon from the skillet and place it on the serving plate.

Recipe Tips

Ensure the salmon is at room temperature before cooking to promote even searing; about 15-20 minutes out of the fridge should suffice.
To avoid overcooking the salmon, use a meat thermometer to check for doneness; it should reach 125°F (51.6°C) for medium-rare, as it will continue to cook slightly after being removed from heat.
When making the mustard sauce, whisk the Dijon mustard with the soy sauce and vinegar before adding the other ingredients to create a smoother emulsion; this helps prevent clumps of mustard in the sauce.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of fish instead of salmon for this recipe?

Yes, you can substitute salmon with other fatty fish like trout or mackerel, which will also complement the flavors of the marinade and sauce. If using leaner fish like cod, reduce the cooking time to prevent dryness.

How should I store leftover salmon and sauce?

Store leftover salmon and sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop over low heat to maintain moisture.

What can I use if I don't have apple cider vinegar?

If you don't have apple cider vinegar, you can substitute it with white wine vinegar, rice vinegar, or even lemon juice for a similar tangy flavor.

Recommended Drink Pairings

Wine

Portuguese: Vinho Verde - This light and slightly effervescent wine complements the richness of the salmon while balancing the acidity of the mustard sauce.

General: Sauvignon Blanc - Known for its bright acidity and citrus notes, Sauvignon Blanc enhances the flavors of the seared salmon and complements the chili and mustard.

Beer

Portuguese: Super Bock - This pale lager offers a crisp and refreshing profile that pairs well with the salmon and the spiciness of the dish.

General: Pilsner - A classic Pilsner provides a clean, refreshing taste that will not overpower the flavors of the seared salmon and mustard sauce.

Other Beverages

Green Tea: The subtle vegetal notes of green tea can enhance the freshness of the salmon and the aromatic components of the dish.
