Frequently Asked Questions

What can I substitute for Maria biscuits if I can't find them?

You can use any plain sweet biscuit or cookie, such as digestive biscuits, vanilla wafers, or even graham crackers. Just make sure they are similar in taste and texture for the best results.

How can I store leftover flan?

Store leftover flan in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It should stay fresh for up to 3 days. You can also cover it with plastic wrap to prevent it from absorbing any odors.

What if my flan didn’t set properly after baking?

If your flan didn’t set properly, it may need more time in the oven, or the oven temperature may have been too low. Make sure to bake it until the toothpick comes out slightly moist – not wet. If it’s not set after cooling, you can try re-baking it in the water bath for an additional 10-15 minutes.

Recommended Drink Pairings

Wine

Portuguese: Madeira Wine - The rich, caramel notes of Madeira complement the sweetness of the flan beautifully.

General: Moscato - This sweet, lightly sparkling wine enhances the creamy texture and flavor of the flan while balancing its richness.

Beer

Portuguese: Super Bock - This lager offers a crisp finish that pairs well with the dessert's creaminess without overpowering it.

General: Blonde Ale - A light and refreshing blonde ale complements the flan's sweetness with its mild hop character.

Other Beverages

Coffee: A smooth, medium roast coffee balances the sweetness of the flan and enhances its flavors with a nice contrast.
