This orange liqueur (licor de laranja), brings back many memories of when I was younger living in the Azores Islands.

Ingredients

1 liter of aguardente (moonshine)6 medium sized oranges1 liter of water6 cups of sugar

Directions

  1. In a wide-mouth bottle, place the oranges in it (broken into pieces and previously washed).
  2. Cover the oranges with the 1 liter of aguardente.
  3. Leave in a place away from sunlight for 2 months.
  4. At the end of the 2 months, strain the aguardente using a coffee filter, leave the oranges inside the bottle and set the aguardente aside.
  5. Place the liter of water inside the bottle with the oranges and shake very well.
  6. Using a thin mesh filter, strain the water into a pan, add the sugar and bring to a boil.
  7. Once it cools down, mix the water with the aguardente, stir every well and place it in a big enough bottle.
  8. Enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of spirit instead of aguardente to make this orange liqueur?

Yes, you can substitute aguardente with other high-proof spirits like vodka or white rum. Keep in mind that the flavor profile may change slightly depending on the spirit you choose.

How should I store the orange liqueur after making it?

Store the orange liqueur in a cool, dark place. It can be kept in the cupboard or refrigerator and should last for several months. If kept sealed and out of sunlight, the flavor can continue to develop over time.

What can I do if my orange liqueur is too sweet?

If your liqueur ends up too sweet for your taste, consider diluting it with more aguardente or water. You can also balance the sweetness by adding a little fresh lemon juice or adjusting the sugar in future batches.
