Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of bread instead of Portuguese buns?

Yes, you can substitute the Portuguese buns with other types of bread like brioche, challah, or even plain white bread. Just ensure the bread is somewhat stale to better absorb the liquid mixture.

How should I store the caramel bread pudding after making it?

Once the caramel bread pudding has cooled and been refrigerated, cover it tightly with plastic wrap or transfer it to an airtight container. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

What should I do if my bread pudding is not set after baking?

If your bread pudding is not set after the recommended baking time, you can return it to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes. Make sure the water bath is still hot and check for doneness by inserting a knife in the center; it should come out clean.

Recommended Drink Pairings

Wine

Portuguese: Madeira Wine - The rich, nutty flavors of Madeira complement the sweetness of the caramel and the custard-like texture of the pudding.

General: Late Bottled Vintage Port - This wine's sweetness and complexity enhance the dessert's caramel notes while balancing its richness.

Beer

Portuguese: Super Bock - The light and crisp profile of this lager helps to cut through the richness of the bread pudding.

General: Cream Ale - Its smooth and slightly sweet character pairs nicely with the dessert's flavors without overwhelming them.

Other Beverages

Coffee: A rich, dark roast coffee provides a perfect contrast to the sweetness of the bread pudding, enhancing the overall experience.
