Why you will love this Juicy Garlic Steak Sandwich with Wine Recipe

The secret to an authentic steak sandwich is infusing the meat with fresh garlic and deglazing the pan with a red wine reduction. This garlic and red wine steak recipe creates a tender, juicy filling served on crusty rolls to soak up the savory sauce. By simmering the onions and beef in a rich wine glaze, you elevate a simple sandwich into a bold, high-protein meal.

With all your ingredients and equipment gathered, you are ready to get started!

Directions

  1. Lay out steaks on a work surface and slice them to small pieces.
  2. In 1-1/2 tablespoons of butter, add and fry the sliced steaks for 5 minutes, stirring it a few times. Once done, set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the other 1-1/2 tablespoons of butter the garlic and the onion and sauté until it is golden brown, transfer the onion to the same dish as the steaks and set aside.
  4. Pour the red wine into the same skillet used to cook the steaks and onions and simmer over medium-high heat until liquid is reduced by about half.
  5. Add the steaks and onions on the skillet with the wine, season with salt and pepper, and cook another minute on both sides or until hot.
  6. Serve the steaks and onions on warm crusty rolls with the sliced cheese (optional).

Recipe Tips

For an extra juicy steak, marinate the sliced steak in the red wine and a pinch of salt for at least 30 minutes before cooking. This will enhance the flavor and tenderness of the meat.
When sautéing the onions, cook them low and slow with the butter until they are caramelized (about 15-20 minutes). This will add a rich sweetness that complements the garlic and steak beautifully.
Avoid overcooking the steak by searing it on high heat for just 2-3 minutes per side, depending on the thickness. Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness; aim for medium-rare at 130°F (54°C) for the best texture and juiciness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute the steak with another type of meat?

Yes, you can substitute the steak with chicken, pork, or even mushrooms for a vegetarian option. Adjust the cooking time accordingly, as different meats may require different cooking durations.

How should I store leftover steak sandwiches?

Store leftover steak sandwiches in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm the steak filling in a skillet and toast the buns slightly before assembling.

What if I don't have red wine on hand?

If you don't have red wine, you can use beef broth mixed with a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to mimic the acidity of wine. Alternatively, a non-alcoholic red wine substitute or grape juice can work as well.
