Recipe Tips

Ensure that the eggs are at room temperature before you start mixing. This helps in achieving a better volume and texture in your orange rolls. Cold eggs can lead to a denser outcome.
When combining the orange juice and zest, make sure to finely zest the oranges to avoid large pieces, which can create an uneven texture in the rolls. Use a microplane for the best results.
Avoid overmixing the batter once you add the flour. Overmixing can lead to tough rolls. Mix just until the flour is incorporated and you see no dry streaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute eggs in this recipe?

Yes, you can use a flaxseed meal or chia seed mix as an egg substitute. For each egg, mix 1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal or chia seeds with 2.5 tablespoons of water, let it sit for a few minutes until it thickens, and then use it in the recipe.

How should I store leftover orange rolls?

Store any leftover orange rolls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also freeze them wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil for up to 2 months.

What should I do if my cake doesn't roll easily?

If your cake is breaking while rolling, it may be overbaked. To prevent this, ensure you bake it only until it's set and slightly springy to the touch. If it's already baked, try gently warming it in the microwave for a few seconds to soften it before attempting to roll again.

Recommended Drink Pairings

Wine

Portuguese: Vinho Verde - This light and slightly effervescent wine offers a refreshing citrus note that complements the orange flavors in the rolls.

General: Moscato - The sweet, fruity profile of Moscato pairs beautifully with the sweetness of the orange rolls, enhancing their deliciousness.

Beer

Portuguese: Super Bock - This pale lager has a crisp taste that balances the sweetness of the orange rolls without overpowering them.

General: Wheat Beer - The fruity and spicy notes of a wheat beer elevate the flavors of the orange in the rolls while keeping the palate refreshed.

Other Beverages

Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice enhances the citrus flavor profile of the rolls, making it a perfect pairing for this dish.
