With all your ingredients and equipment gathered, you are ready to get started!

Directions

  1. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or deep skillet to 365 F.
  2. Carefully separate the rings from each other, keeping only the larger rings.
  3. Combine the flour, baking powder, and seasoned salt in a medium-sized bowl.
  4. Coat each onion ring in the flour mixture and set aside.
  5. Combine the remaining flour mixture with the milk and egg, and beat well until no lumps remain.
  6. Pour the panko bread crumbs into a shallow bowl.
  7. Dip each onion ring into the batter and shake off the excess. Dip the onion rings into the panko bread crumbs to fully coat.
  8. Deep fry the onion rings, a few at a time, for 4 to 5 minutes, flipping halfway, or until golden brown. Remove to a wire rack to allow the excess oil to drain.
  9. Season with more seasoning salt, if desired, and serve immediately.

Recipe Tips

  • For extra crispy onion rings, soak the cut onion rings in cold water for at least 30 minutes before breading. This enhances the crunch and helps the batter adhere better.
  • Instead of using plain bread crumbs, try seasoning them with garlic powder, paprika, or Italian herbs to add more flavor to your onion rings.
  • Avoid overcrowding the frying pan when cooking the onion rings. Fry them in batches to ensure even cooking and prevent the oil temperature from dropping, which can lead to greasy rings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other types of onions instead of sweet onions?

Yes, you can use other types of onions such as yellow onions or red onions. However, keep in mind that sweet onions will give you a milder, sweeter flavor, whereas yellow onions might taste sharper and red onions could add a hint of sweetness with a little more bite.

How can I store leftover fried onion rings?

To store leftover fried onion rings, place them in an airtight container and refrigerate them for up to 3 days. For best results, reheat them in an oven to maintain their crispiness, rather than using a microwave.

What can I use as a substitute for eggs in the batter?

You can use unsweetened applesauce (1/4 cup per egg) or a flaxseed meal (1 tablespoon flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water, letting it sit for 5 minutes to thicken) as an egg substitute in the batter. This will help bind the ingredients without using eggs.
