Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F or 175C.
  2. Beat butter, white sugar, and brown sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until smooth. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then stir in vanilla. Dissolve baking soda in hot water. Add to batter along with salt. Stir in flour, chocolate chips, and walnuts.
  3. Drop spoonfuls of dough 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheets.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until edges are nicely browned, about 10 minutes. Cool on the baking sheets briefly before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

Recipe Tips

Ensure the butter is at room temperature before creaming it with the sugars; this will help create a light and fluffy texture. If the butter is too soft or melted, the cookies may spread too much while baking.
When measuring flour, use the spoon and level method instead of scooping directly from the bag. This prevents packing the flour, which can lead to dry cookies. Use a spoon to aerate the flour, then spoon it into the measuring cup and level it off with a knife.
If you prefer chewier cookies, chill the cookie dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before baking. This will help the cookies maintain their shape and develop a more intense flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I substitute the butter with another type of fat?

Yes, you can substitute butter with an equal amount of margarine or coconut oil for a dairy-free option. However, this may affect the flavor and texture slightly.

How should I store the cookies after baking?

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. If you want to keep them longer, you can freeze them for up to 3 months.

What can I do if my cookies spread too much while baking?

If your cookies spread too much, it may be because the butter was too soft. Try chilling the dough for 30 minutes before baking. Additionally, ensure you're measuring the flour correctly and not packing it down in the measuring cup.
